Make Colors of the Season Work in Your Abode

Muted natural greens and deep majestic purples. Bright mustard yellow. Pale and rich grays. If this autumn’s “it” colors feel a bit like a cloudy day in a Middle Tennessee field, it’s not surprising.
Bringing the latest colors into our homes is sometimes trickey—just small doses can give the best feel. This season is no exception, says Anthea Click, a Spring Hill home stager.

Click will be giving specific, free fall color tips suited to your own house at the grand opening of the Kirkland’s store at Cool Springs Pointe, 1624 Galleria Blvd., in Brentwood from 1-4 p.m. on Sept. 10 and 11.

Here are some easy steps you can do now to get started, Click said.

First, in any room, find the neutral point, which is the place to start.

Most of us already have a swirl of color, texture and pattern in our rooms with all of our furnishings, treasures and keepsakes.

Clear everything out to show the room’s bare bones. This will give clues about a few key color schemes that can work.

Next, bring the furniture back.

Consider rearranging the furniture, such as at an angle, for a new approach. It’s always easy to switch smaller pieces, such as adding a new ottoman or end table in a new style, rather than changing the bigger, pricier pieces of furniture.

It’s also simple to move a piece to a different room, such as an overstuffed chair for a bedroom rather than the living room.

Finally, embrace the colors of autumn.

Here are décor colors we’re expecting to see and are already detecting: mustard yellow, deep teal, deep purple, light natural greens, warm browns like coffee colors, and grays in lights and darks.
To make these colors work in your home:

• Change the drapes or window treatments.

•  Bring in new lamps with more detailed and colorful lamp shades, which always show color and change the feel of a room.

•  Add different vases and pillows.
•  Repaint smaller areas in new colors, such as wood bookshelf panels, the inside backing on a (non-antique) china cabinet or the inside backing of your kitchen cabinetry.
•  Add an inexpensive set of photo frames and paint the set the same color for a wall focal point.
•  Paint an inexpensive end table.
The ideas for bringing in color are limited only by our imaginations and personal preferences. Choose boldly this fall, but do it in limited quantities for a balanced effect.
