Holiday Decorating Trends 2011
According to the experts, a preference for the natural look in holiday decor has grown and is being showcased in a number of shops this year. Others believe the traditional reds and greens will always have their place in the holiday landscape.
Dark traditional shades of red and green (dark red, hunter green, and copper, etc.) are what Richie Edwards of Gabriel's Garden is forecasting for this season's home decor. "I'm also seeing sky blue and mint with silver and white accents, as well as sky blue and apple with gold and brown accents," he says. "For the kids, bright metallics of pink, blue, green, and red. An example of Edwards' work can be found on the front cover of the Nov/Dec issue of House & Home & Garden⁄™ magazine on our home page.
Mysty Wetfall of Rickenbaker Designs says, "Last year we saw a log o silver mercury glass and monochromatic design in holiday decor. I believe we're seeing the same imagery again this year, with a little variation. Vintage traditional takes on reds and greens are always a popular choice. And I am seeing some natural elements being introduced—birch branches, pine cones, and other earth tones are being incorporated into modern holiday decor."
Reporting she is using "contrasting colors" to give a contemporary feel to the holidays is Tara Johnson of Scarlet Designs. "Consider blue and orange or yelllow adn purple," she says. "Use and re-use itmes around the house can be used as Christmas decor. Glass bowls, canisters, and vases filled with glass colored balls can become an instant centerpiece for the dinner table. Everyday plates can be made festive with a holiday-inspried charger."
Westfall says she believes the green or eco-friendly movement is making a noticable difference in holdiay decorating. "The corporation of natural elements creates a more environmentally friendly design, and additionally harks back to traditional designs found in history. Holly, pine cones, and other natural elements from the backyard make a setting that is truly yours."
According to Amanda Burdge of AB Home Interiors, yellow and aubergine as well as aqua and green. She doesn't believe, however, that the green or eco-friendly movement has made a great deal of difference in what homeowners are choosing for their homes. "People always use outdoor decor items, but for actual decorations they choose what they like."
