Area Rug Trends
What rugs do best, in addition to the warmth and comfort they add to a room, is provide a burst of color or a subtle statement. And as homeowners have continued to replace carpet with hardwoods and tile, the demand for area rugs has grown.
Sara Ray of Beth Haley Design reports her company has seen a lot of interest in monochromatic and solid rugs with lots of texture. “Most of our customers request rugs that will be highly functional, easily maintained, and something that will wear well,” she says.
Stating that her clients are asking for more muted and monochromatic rugs, such as the Oushaks or tone-on-tone rugs, is Kim Costner of Kmpact Design, Inc. “As more families are removing carpet due to allergy concerns, the demand for durable and beautiful area rugs has increased significantly,” she adds.
“Area rugs can give a room much more style than the average buyer allows,” says Tanna Miller of Trends & Traditions. “Rugs can be quiet backgrounds or a fabulous opportunity for color, pattern, and textures.”
Gail Adkins of Change Magic says, “Sometimes an area rug can be the inspiration piece for the decor of the entire room. Sometimes it may tie the room together. When an area rug is chosen and displayed as carefully as a piece of art, the room takes on a distinctive feel that sets it apart from the ordinary.”
“The demand for more transitional and contemporary rugs has increased in the past decade and patterns and color choices are as individualistic and varied as my clients,” says Anna Aycock of Designs By Anna Aycock. “Area rugs are more decorative than wall-to-wall carpeting and offer flexibility when it’s time for a change of decor.”
Hardwood floors may be popular, but according to Tricia Liles of House of Carpet, area rugs soften a room and add a cozy warmth to the space that allows people to relax.” Other advantages of area rugs, Liles, says, are that you can shop for a rug and carry it home with you that day.
Offering all styles and prices of area rugs, Brentwood Interiors stocks machinemade, hand-knotted, shag, and other rug varieties. “While we have contemporary styles, our traditional rugs get the most attention,” reports to Dan Rucker.
