Painting with Light
Homeowners are becoming more aware of the impact of lighting in their home design, according the Shannon Erwin of Hantel Kitchens & Baths. “The lighting of a room can be a design element all its own,” she says. “It should compliment all the other elements in the room.”
According to David Berman, director of training for the Home Theater Specialists of America, “Many people don’t realize how much the application of light will change the colors and shapes in a room. The secret is to work with what you already have. For example, lower light level in a room to enhance the detail in a marble countertop, make the pattern in a Persian rug pop, and give the illusion of a new coat of paint.”
Jackie Byrd of Hermitage Lighting Gallery reports that homeowners are more aware of lighting in their homes, and the impact of lighting and lighting fixtures. “As trends change in fashion and furniture, so do lighting concepts and styles. Lighting impacts how each room functions. In the kitchen, for example, the use of recessed lighting, under-counter lighting, and pendent lighting creates layers of light suitable both for tasks and overall lighting.”
There is a staggering variety of lighting options available today, according to Linda Sinclair of Rediscovered Rooms. “The experts use light layering to combine different types of lighting in creative ways to create visual interest and drama with the interplay of light and shadows.”
While everyone talks about dimming lights, according to Ramcey Rodriguez, preset lighting means greater control. “Most people will not consistently take time to adjust five dimmers for tasks and use in an individual room. But you can create lighting scenes to meet different needs, coordinating lights and shades. Press a button to switch from one lighting combination to another. Use the lights you want, at the times you want, to improve productivity and save energy. And optional infrared wireless remote controls put light control in your hands from anywhere in a room.”
Gail Hancock with Baylor Bone Interiors says, “Many rooms in the home have become multi-use, and specific lighting fixtures are needed to meet the light demands. Today’s lighting patterns require specific light fixtures and specific placement and control to meet homeowners’ needs.
