Shopping Columbia
Columbia is the perfect spot to slip away for a day of shopping. From antiques and home furnishings to art and florals, this community celebrates its small-town feel with charm and warmth. From I-65 South, take Saturn Parkway to Hwy. 31 and turn south toward Columbia.
On the way south to the heart of the city, stop at Price Point Furniture on the right for a look at their furnishings which include pieces for the living room, dining room, and bedroom, as well as children’s rooms, home offices, and home entertainment areas.
Practically next door lies Badcock Home Furnishings & More, which offers furniture for casual and more formal dining, the bedroom, and living room. In addition you’ll find mattresses, electronics, appliances, lighting, and accessories.
When you reach Columbia, turn left on Fifth St. and at Main St., just before the street crosses the river, you’ll find Sarai Lighting on the left. Here you’ll find a wide range of chandeliers, lamps, and outdoor lighting for homes ranging from contemporary to traditional.
Turn left on Main St. and turn right at the public square to park in front of Accents & Antiques of Columbia. This antique store has lots of furnishings to explore including lighting, dressers, glassware, and more. Don’t overlook the downstairs which doubles the amount of space to explore.
Next door to Accents & Antiques is the Square Market Cafe where you’ll want to plan to have lunch. This fabulous little restaurant has the best food in the area, and people drive from Spring Hill to enjoy the fare.
From Public Square, turn right on Seventh St. and park across the street from The Westbury House, home of some of the finest antiques. From armoires and dining tables, to rugs. chairs. and art, you’ll be amazed at the finds Carolyn Sushnik brings to this shop. Be sure to say hello to Sir Winston, a special six-toed feline descended from Ernest Hemingway’s cat.
Turn right on Dunnington St. and left at Columbia Carriage House Florist and Gift Shop. In addition to beautiful real and faux florals, this shop features art, gifts, seasonal decor, and more.
Leave the downtown area by driving west on Garden St. about six blocks until it forks splits. Take the lefthand split, which is Trotwood Avenue and proceed several blocks to J. Steward Floral & Design across from Columbia Academy. Beautiful floral arrangements, real and faux, reside against a backdrop of fabulous art, decorating accessories, and small furnishings. Steward is a Columbia legend noted for his design expertise.
Continue west on Trotwood past the hospital and cross James Campbell Blvd. In a few blocks you’ll find the newly remodeled Shoppes at Neely’s Mill which shelters Heritage Appliance Center with its collection of high end appliances for kitchen, laundry, and more.
Return to the James Campbell Blvd. intersection and turn right and then left at the next block on Hatcher Lane. In the 600 block, Lively Florist is on the left. Far more than just a florist, Lively Florist offers an amazing range of accessories, faux florals, and small home furnishings, as well as fresh floral arrangements. Not immediately obvious, however, is Lively’s Christmas House, a separate building that shelters a wonderland of holiday decorations that opens to the public on November 1 each year (they gave us a sneak preview). Themed rooms range from bright fucias, blues, and lime greens paired with contemporary looks, to the space featuring nature’s winter colors. Whether you’re looking for traditional holiday decor or something really unusual, you’re sure to find it here.
Return to James Campbell Blvd. and turn right, and then right again on Trotwood and head back to the downtown area. Four blocks after Trotwood runs into Seventh St., turn right on Walker St. to find Loblolly Interiors Market on the right. This charming old home shelters a collection of art, antiques, and gifts all combined in vivid warm colors that create a shop in which you’ll want to linger. If you’re seeking the unusual, one-of-a-kind don’t miss this.
Turn left at Walker St.’s intersection with Eighth Street. Ye Peddler is on the right in another older home. Featuring china, crystal, and collectibles, this shop also offers amazing seasonal decor items. The store reflects the excellent taste of its owner, an interior designer, and this is the place to shop for a gift in any price range for yourself or a friend.
Turn left on Hwy. 31. Turn left on US Hwy 412/Bear Creek Pike. Bear Creek Garden Center on the right offers outdoor statuary, a wide range of plant materials, and a gift shop that includes all manner of items for the gardener or nature lover.
Just beyond the garden center, IWS Granite & Marble, also on the right side of the road, boasts a showroom that highlights the company’s broad variety of natural stone available for counters, floors, and more. Check out the samples in the showroom as well as the slabs in the yard. The same operation manages Ideal Hardwood Floors which offers hardwoods of all species as well as hardwood refinishing.
As you drive north on Hwy. 31 back to Saturn Parkway, stop at Discount Plumbing & Electric for a variety of lighting, plumbing fixtures, and appliances.
